Diagnosing Toenail Fungus

Only a podiatrist is qualified to diagnose and treat toenail fungus. Your podiatrist will take a medical history and visually inspect your feet for signs of infection, discoloration, or other changes in the appearance of your nails. In order to make an accurate diagnosis, they may also take certain tests, such as scraping off cells from underneath your nails, which are then examined under a microscope, or examining cultures taken through a blood test.

Treating Toenail Fungus

A podiatrist at Rocky Mountain Foot & Ankle will create an individualized treatment plan to help with your toenail fungus. This may include:

  • Topical antifungal medications applied directly onto the affected nail
  • Oral antifungal medication to fight off the infection from within the body
  • Laser therapy or other non-invasive treatments such as light therapy that can help to kill off the fungus without damaging the nail

In rare cases, surgery may be necessary to remove the infected tissue and promote healthy nail growth.
